Powering Australia’s Largest Medicinal Cannabis Facility
Project Overview
CV provided a design and construct solution for a private 33kV system to power Hydroganics’ medicinal cannabis facility, the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. The facility includes advanced automation, climate-controlled environments and high-capacity electrical infrastructure to support its operations.
- Client KTQ Group, Austranna, Hydroganics Pty Ltd
- Location Mutdapilly, QLD
Scope of Works
CV delivered the robust electrical infrastructure needed to maintain a consistent and controlled environment for cultivation.
Key deliverables:
- HV Infrastructure: 33kV HV switchboard, 4 x 33kV/415V transformers and protection systems for reliable power supply.
- LV & Facility Services: 4 x 3,500A Main Switchboards supplying up to 14,000 amps to power lighting, irrigation and security systems.
- Specialist Installations: Over 6km of cable tray for 3,000+ grow lights, along with automated motor and sensor controls to regulate temperature, humidity and airflow.
Challenges & Solutions
Our team implemented proactive solutions to keep the project on track and meet operational needs.
- Site & Layout Constraints: Facility design made it difficult to establish a reliable HV ring system. We resolved this by adding a ring main unit, generator and LV bus tie solutions.
- Stakeholder Coordination: With subcontractors across multiple regions, we ensured clear communication and proactive scheduling to prevent delays.
- Extreme Working Conditions: With temperatures exceeding 45°C and 90% humidity, we implemented hydration packs, cooling systems and shift rotations to maintain worker safety and productivity.
Key Achievements
This project delivered a high-capacity, future-ready power solution that meets current demands and supports long-term operations.
- Sustainable Future Planning: The system is ready to integrate with a planned 3MVA solar farm, enabling long-term energy efficiency and reduced reliance on external power.
- New Industry Benchmark: As one of QLD’s largest medicinal cannabis developments, the facility sets a new standard for power systems in controlled agriculture.
- Tracking to Schedule: Despite environmental and logistical challenges, the project remains on schedule, with a strong focus on safety and quality.
Outcome & Client Benefit
The power system enables Hydroganics to operate efficiently while preparing for future growth.
- Seamless Power Integration: CV’s end-to-end delivery of both HV and LV systems streamlined execution, reducing complexity and improving coordination.
- Keeping the Project on Track: Early engagement helped us resolve issues from a previous LV consultant, preventing setbacks and ensuring timely progress.
- Building for the Future: The electrical system is designed to support future expansions, enabling Hydroganics to scale as demand increases.
