Project Overview
The Coombabah Sewage Treatment Plant (CSTP), the Gold Coast’s largest facility, treats around 50% of the city’s wastewater. A condition review of Preliminary Treatment Facility A (PTF-A) identified the need for a new PTF-C to support increasing demand and ensure resilience. PTF-C was commissioned to boost capacity while PTF-A is taken offline for review. Once operational, PTF-B and PTF-C together will treat 500,000 EP at 4,000 L/s, ensuring long-term service continuity.
- Client Acciona AU & NZ
- Location Gold Coast, QLD
Scope of Works
CV was appointed to support the expansion of CSTP’s preliminary treatment infrastructure, integrating new utilities with minimal disruption.
Key deliverables:
- Construction of PTF-C with inlet chamber, screening, grit removal, odour control, and interconnection to existing infrastructure.
- Reinstatement of Storm Overflow Lagoon return line.
- Utilities upgrades: potable and service water, compressed air, and fire protection.
- Installation of low voltage electrical systems.
- Integration of SCADA and control systems for remote management.
- Finalisation of civil works including pit and pipe installation.
Innovation & Execution Strategy
To minimise plant disruption and ensure long-term efficiency, CV implemented a robust project delivery strategy:
- Integrated Design Review – Alignment of new systems with legacy infrastructure through 3D modelling and stakeholder collaboration.
- Utility Phasing & Redundancy Planning – Works sequenced to allow for continuous treatment plant operation.
- Modular Electrical Architecture – Engineered switchboards and systems for rapid install and commissioning.
- Cross-Disciplinary Coordination – Active engagement with mechanical and civil teams to align project staging and delivery.
Outcomes & Impact
- Enhanced Treatment Capacity: PTF-C provides an additional 250,000 EP capacity to meet current and future community demand.
- Operational Continuity: Successful integration with live systems while maintaining treatment throughput.
- Improved Resilience: Infrastructure built to modern standards to support longevity, redundancy and growth.
- Safety & Compliance: All systems designed and installed to meet regulatory, WHS, and performance criteria.
